The Nutcracker is one of the first ballets children get to see and at a very young age young dance students get to perform and be a part of. It is a story told through the eyes of Clara a young girl who dreams of a fantastic adventure filled with daring sword fights, far off places, magic spells,  making her world a bigger and more magical place than it used to be. This year, three young and talented girls will be essaying the role of Clara, all of them sharing the same innocence, spirit and enthusiasm that brings Clara to life. Meet the girls taking the stage as Clara in Ballet Philippines’ production of Edna Vida and Alice Reyes’ The Nutcracker.

Channel is a Ballet Philippines Scholar. She has been with the school since 2015 and has been part of all school productions. This year she experiences essaying a lead role in her first show with the company.

“I was stunned. I didn’t expect this to happen because, out of so many girls who auditioned I was one of the lucky ones who got the role of Clara. I’m happy but at the same time I’m nervous because it’s my first time being part of a Company show that I’ve been wishing for.”

To prepare for the role she rigorously studies videos of Clara. This includes not only the steps but also the mime, this helps her get an idea of how she could interpret the role for when she is on stage. She sees Clara is a happy and adventurous girl, similar to her, she faces a new adventure working with the company and other children.

AJ started her ballet training in 2012 at the JNA Dance Center under mentors Effie Nañas, Perry Sevidal, and Kris-Belle Paclibar-Mamangun, focusing on technique and body conditioning. In 2016, AJ was also part of another production of The Nutcracker as an angel and as one of the children of Mother Ginger. This year, she joins Ballet Philippines essaying the role of Clara.

“I was happy and excited when I found out because I was going to play the lead role of Clara in this production. Clara is a playful kid who loves Christmas and I share that with her. I practice my expressions and the steps of the dance a lot so I can tell the story very well. “

Her enthusiasm for the role and the show will surely bring Clara’s story to life.

Zabrinna is a student of Danspace Ballet School. She joins Ballet Philippines in this production as Clara.

“I felt really good during my audition and I was really happy when I finally found out that I was going to be Clara. I have watched the ballet many times so when I do it, I try to think of happy things to get into character. Clara likes going on adventures and doing cool things and I like doing the same.”

Zabrinna is excited to be performing with Ballet Philippines, but she says the thing that excites her the most is that she gets to meet and work with new people.
