At 8 PM, the theater bell chimed, signaling the start of the performance. Dressed in stunning Filipiniana, patrons and ballet enthusiasts eagerly made their way into the 1,740-seat theater, becoming the first to witness the uplifting spectacle of “Ang Panaginip.” More than just a performance, the ballet marked the grand finale of Ballet Philippines' 55th season—a journey that began in August 2024 with La Sylphide and continued with Peter Pan in December.

“Tonight, we celebrate the Filipina—one who dares to dream without limits, boldly defies expectations, and rewrites her happy endings,” said Ballet Philippines President Kathleen Liechtenstein in her welcome remarks. “Through a new original Filipiniana ballet, ‘Ang Panaginip’ pays tribute to our heritage, with a libretto by Mawi de Ocampo, original music composed by Glenn Aquias, Filipiniana costumes by Jor-el Espina, with an AI set design and choreography by our Artistic Director, Misha Martynyuk.”

Audiences were transported into a world of color, movement, and music, where tradition met innovation. Espina’s stunning costumes, inspired by the diverse regions of the Philippines, were a visual feast, while the choreography moved beyond conventional folk influences, creating a ballet that was light, dynamic, and thoroughly enchanting.

Martynyuk shares, “As part of our 55th Season themed Relevé—a movement that signifies rising to new heights—it is with great pride that I present ‘Ang Panaginip,’ a performance that embodies both ascent and transformation.” The Artistic Director enthuses, “This production marks a new step for Ballet Philippines, a fresh challenge for our dancers, and a celebration of innovation. The story comes alive through a unique blend of neo-classical ballet, dance pantomime, and other styles, paired with an original musical score that offers complexity and depth.”

For Martynyuk, it is not just another performance, but an opportunity to rise higher, master intricate rhythms, shifting tempos, and the technical demands of small, precise movements. Each rehearsal and every role is a chance to grow where the dancers are challenged to reach their full potential.

He reveals, “In crafting this piece, I found inspiration in architecture—both human-made and natural. In the first act, for instance, I drew from the breathtaking beauty of the Seven Falls in Lake Sebu to create a picture of nature’s grandeur, blending imagination and reality to transport audiences to a dreamlike world.”
Jo Ann Bitagcol
As Ballet Philippines marked the finale of its 55th season, Liechtenstein expressed her deep gratitude: “None of this would be possible without you—our audience, supporters, and fellow dreamers. You fuel our passion, lift our artistry, and help us extend the inspiring power of ballet to communities far and wide.”
